The Spirit of Attack

Fighter Pilot Stories

Flying Century Series fighters during the Cold War - stories told of actual missions either by the author (first half of the book) or by other fighter pilots (second half of the book). The missions are backed up with photos so the reader knows the kinds of planes referred to and can better understand what happened. The first part is the author's own experiences in Alaska, Korea, and Vietnam. The second half of the book has my friends' stories ranging from shooting down a German aircraft in WW I, to combat with Romanian fighters in WW II, to shooting down a MiG in Korea (and being shot down himself)

I have just watched a YouTube short about Major Gordon, and when I learned he flew F100s in Vietnam, couldn't help but wonder where he was stationed. I was at PhuCat airbase in 1968 / 69 and we flew F100s, but I don't recall any night sorties. My memory is that we flew twice a day. Sorties of 8 fighters left mid-morning and returned around lunch time, then 8 more went out mid-afternoon and came back in time for dinner.

As much as I love watching videos and playing games about fighter planes, there's nothing I enjoy more than reading stories about them. Is the book available in any local bookstore?

Wow, I just finished reading The Spirit of Attack, Fighter Pilot Stories, and I'm absolutely blown away! The intricate plot twists and deeply developed characters kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. What really stood out to me was the author's ability to seamlessly blend elements of suspense, and history into a captivating narrative. I found myself completely immersed in the richly detailed world they created, and I couldn't put the book down until I reached the surprising conclusion. The Spirit of Attack is a must-read for anyone who loves a thrilling and thought-provoking story that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page. We would love to see books like this in physical bookstores!!

I'm the author of the book -- a fighter pilot with 132 combat missions in Vietnam -- and I included stories from my friends. I flew many aircaft, but primarily the F-100, F-102, and F-106. Of these, the F-106 was my favorite fighter. In the F-106 I intercepted Russians. I was with 4 F-106s that challenged 20 North Korean MiGs off the east coast of North Korea. The MiGs turned back, so I lost my best chance of gettng a kill... it was a "target rich environment"!

I buzzed seven Russian warships off the coast of North Korea. I don't know what they were doing there, but it seems to have been linked to a Russian plan to invade China, at the same time as President Nixon's 1969 "Madman Nuclear Alert".

I include the story of P-38s attacking Ploesti in World War II. I heard the story from the P-38 pilots themselves at several reunions of our squadron, and then found a Romanian pilot's story of how his squadron fought the P-38s on that mission. It's a great story of a big air battle -- and very unusual because I have the stories from both sides of the combat!

I have posted over 40 videos on Facebook and YouTube under Spirit of Attack/Bruce Gordon. I'm 88 years old now, and want the public to know what we did back then -- we had the Spirit of Attack!
